Yosemite National Park case study

Where?
Yosemite national park is located in California in the USA. It is an example of sustainable management in a MOUNTAIN AREA in an MEDC.

Attractions
It is a National Park
Sheer rock faces such as El Capitan.
Glacier point
Magnificent views over the valleys

Problems
1)Receiving 8000 visitors every day in August and this number is increasing.
2) Lack of car parking spaces.
3) Road traffic congestion (esp July and August)
4) Overcrowding and footpath erosion.
5) POllution for car exhausts.

Sustainable solutions
What was good about the sustainable plan for Yosemite is that it involved the public in decision making processses. Over 10,000 public comments were made and taken in to account.

The final plans cost $300 million.

1) Parking is being designated outside the park and then a shittle bus is going to bring people in to the park. This will reduce traffic in the park and solve parking problems

2) A new visitor centre opening near to this parking area which will contain information on how to look after and protect the park.

3) Camping is being encouraged rather than hotels and lodges to prevent too much development. Greater facilities are being provided at the acmpsites to make them more attractive.

4) Many new paths and trails have been designated to prevent erosion and trampling of valuable vegetation.
