Illegal immigrants killed off the coast of Africa!

Every year it is thought that thousands of immigrants travel from Africa illegally to find work or a better life in Europe. These immigrants will usually travel by boats in very cramped and crowded conditions from Northern Africa (often Libya or Tunisia) across to Spain.

This week, hundreds of people are feared dead after at least one boat packed with migrants heading for Europe illegally sank off the coast of Libya. Libyan officials said at least 21 people had died and about 20 were rescued after a boat reportedly carrying 250 people went down.

There are unconfirmed reports that a second boat, carrying more than 300 people, also sank in the same area.

Year 10 and Year 12 - think about why these migrants might have been leaving Africa, where they might have come from and what might happen to them on the journey and when they arrive in Europe!
