Surtsey is an Island that lies about 30km south of Iceland. It was formed by a series of huge volcanic eruptions under the sea in 1963 and is therefore one of the newest formed land masses on earth. As a result of its recent formation, scientists are using it as a controlled laboratory to investigate how it develops new life through what we call plant succession. In 1963 it was an island of just bare rock and lava. Today it contains animals, plants and even trees.
