Year 11! Case study: Home Farm

Changes affecting farming systems in the EU

Case study: Home farm in Birmingham
FACTS

  • Mr Redfern owns Home Farm where he farms 300 sheep and a herd of young bulls. He also farms some crops including wheat and Barley.

REASONS FOR DIVERSIFYING

  • Subsidies from the government have been decreased leading to a decrease income of 40,000 pounds between 1998 and 1999.

  • He was only getting 8p per litre of milk produced so his dairy became disused.

HOW DID HE DIVERSIFY?

  • Used some fields for pony grazing (charged 30 pound a month)

  • Due to proximity to the airport, he allowed cars to park in one of his field and charged for this for 3 pound a day.

  • He changed one of his outbuildings in to Bed and Breakfast accomodation with 8 rooms. This is good as he is near the airport and the National exhibition centre.

  • He stored caravans in one of his fields also (upto 20 at 250 pounds per year)

  • Check it out, Nigel Redfern is totally a real person and here is the link to their bed and breakfast website. I want to go there and visit - anyone up for a field trip?
